WHAT IS YOGA?

The word "yoga" means "union". Yoga is a form of exercise based on the belief that the body and breath are intimately connected with the mind. By controlling the breath and holding the body in steady poses or "asanas", yoga creates harmony. The mind becomes still, and the Inner Self can be experienced.

Yoga practice consists of five key elements: proper breathing, proper exercise, proper relaxation, proper diet, and positive thinking and meditation. The part of yoga familiar to us in the west focuses on the exercises, or asanas, designed to ease tense muscles, to tone up the internal organs, and to improve the flexibility of the body's joints and ligaments. This is called Hatha Yoga.

The Asanas (exercises): Yoga exercises focus first on the health of the spine, it's strength and flexibility. The spinal column houses the spinal cord, the main nerve cable of the body. By maintaining the spine's flexibility and strength through exercise, circulation is increased and the nerves are ensured their supply of nutrients and oxygen.

Asanas work on the internal machinery of the body, the glands and organs, as well as the muscles. They affect the deeper and more subtle parts of the body. The internal organs receive massage and stimulation through the various movements of the asanas, and are toned into more efficient functioning. The endocrine system (glands and hormones) is rejuvenated, helping to balance the emotions and improve mental outlook on life.

Hatha Yoga

Hatha means yoga of the body. Therefore all yoga involving the body is Hatha yoga. Hatha is a very general term that can encompass many of the physical types of yoga. If a class is described as Hatha style, it is probably going to be slow-paced and gentle, and can provide a good introduction to the basic yoga poses.

Ashtanga yoga

Ashtanga Yoga Ashtanga is based on the teachings of Sri Pattabhi Jois and emphasizes the connection between movement and breath. It is a dynamic system composed of a specifically designed series of postures that emphasizes strength and flexibility, while working to focus and calm the mind. It is especially well suited for active people that are looking for a workout. Ashtanga, which means eight limbs in Sanskrit, is a fast-paced, intense style of yoga practice. A set series of poses is performed, always in the same order. Ashtanga practice is very physically demanding, because of the constant movement from one pose to the next. In yoga terminology, this movement is called flow.

Vinyasa flow yoga

Vinyasa flow Yoga This is a graceful flowing practice that creatively fuses the elements from other hatha methods, primarily Ashtanga and Iyengar, depending on the approach of the particular teacher. Each class is original and creative, focuses on the marriage of breath and movement and blends the artistic expression of the human heart with universal principles of alignment or bio-mechanics of the body. Like Hatha, Vinyasa is a general term that is used to describe many different types of classes. Vinyasa, which means breath-synchronized movement, tends to be a more vigorous style based on the performance of a series of poses called Sun Salutations in which movement is matched to the breath. A Vinyasa class will typically start with a number of sun salutations to warm up the body for more intense stretching which is done at the end of class.

Pulse Yoga

Pulse Yoga is a totally new exercise paragon, this ideal form of exercise applies micro movements & free weights to basic yoga postures.  These repetitive pulse movements serve to strengthen, sculpt & tone.  The use of free weights with the postures defines muscles of the arms & shoulders.  Key areas such as the abdominal, lower back & gluteus muscles are also targeted.  The sequencing of the postures allows you to flow smoothly through the routine reaping all the benefits of yoga such as flexibility, strength, balance & stamina.  The pulse element works to sculpt & tone the body along the way.  Pulse Yoga offers all of the benefits of yoga & much more.

What makes Pulse Yoga different to other styles of Yoga?

  • Principle muscle utilisation for postures using free weights & micro movements

  • Strengthen & tone key problem areas such as Abs, lower back, upper arms & gluteus muscles.

  • Builds bone density helping to reduce the risk of breaking bones which helps stabilize the progression of Osteoporosis.

  • Decrease blood glucose & lowers triglyceride levels.
  • Lowers cholesterol.

  • Decreases body fat (especially abdominal fat)
  • Expend more calories

  • Develop greater strength & flexibility.

  • Engage intense internal muscles with postures utilising a narrow base of support (i.e. Standing on one leg) to develop core awareness & learn balance in motion.

Pregnancy yoga

IPregnancy yoga benefits both mother and baby, supporting healthy pregnancy and offering practical and grounded preparation for birth. The Mother has the opportunity to deeply relax and learn to connect with herself and her baby, in a loving, supportive environment. Through understanding how to connect with the breath and allow the body to open through gentle postures she is prepared for labour. Jill teaches encourages exploration in her classes and places emphasis on allowing the inner wisdom of the body to shine, helping people to trust themselves and their journey.

Kundalini yoga

The emphasis in Kundalini is on the breath in conjunction with physical movement, with the purpose of freeing energy in the lower body and allowing it to move upwards. All asana practices make use of controlling the breath, but in Kundalini, the exploration of the effects of the breath (also called prana, meaning energy) on the postures is essential. Kundalini uses rapid, repetitive movements rather than holding poses for a long time, and the teacher will often lead the class in call and response chanting. An intensive form of yoga, awakening the body, mind, and spirit. Kundalini yoga is based on the teachings of Yogi Bhajan and it emphasizes breath (Pranayama) and Mantra (sound or chanting), focuses on raising consciousness and energy (Kundalini) up from the base of the spine.

Sivananda Yoga

Sivananda, founded by the late Swami Vishnu Devananda, set the tone for many of the first yoga classes taught in this country. The 60 to 90-minute classes incorporate a short chant, poses, breathing, and deep relaxation. Classes are gentle in approach, and usually follow the 12 poses found in the Sun Salutation. Sivananda, one of the world's largest schools of yoga, is very supportive to beginners. It follows a set structure that includes breathing, classic asanas, and relaxation, as well as principles of diet and positive thinking.
